BLACK HISTORY MONTH LECTURE BY CATHERINE STRAIGHT, 8:15 p.m. The St. Martin de Porres Society, Black Student Union and Social Justice Program at the University of St. Thomas is hosting this lecture by Catherine Straight, national assignments editor at USA Today, in the Menil Museum Foyer, 1515 Sul Ross. The lecture is followed by a brief tour of the Menil’s African Art Exhibit.

ICONOGRAPHY WORKSHOP, 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. St. John Chrysostom Byzantine Catholic Church in Houston is offering an icon-writing (painting) studio for adults and accompanied children over 10 (at any artistic level), Feb. 27-28. The workshop is led by Very Rev. Father Elias Rafaj, pastor of St. John Chrysostom Church and noted iconographer. Attendees will write an icon of Christ the Bridegroom (Christ of the Passion) and will learn techniques for faces, garments, gilding and background. The classes are Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. and Sunday from 12:30 until 6:30 p.m.). There also is an opportunity to participate in the Divine Liturgy on Sunday at 10 a.m. The cost of $140 (for accompanied children under 18, $60) and covers all supplies, refreshments and on Saturday a Lenten lunch.
